• Know different methods of communication;

• Work in teams to create an informational video on a current issue.

English Short Course is part of the ASDAN non-GCSE option. This course is for learners who would struggle to access GCSE courses.

The developing communication skills modules will further support learners to develop the basics of working with all the skills mentioned and will enable students to identify real-life problems where literacy skills are needed.

Across the module, learners will use their analysis, critical thinking and research skills. These will be challenged and stimulated through a range of real-life scenarios, so that the student’s work will be regarded as more meaningful.

Learners will be challenged to write a formal email and use the CC/BCC, add links and reply all functions (1A3), they will fill in a job application form (1A4) and will create and deliver a simple oral presentation on a topic of their choice (1A7).

The students will then undertake a team activity in which they will have to create an informational video on a current issue of their choice (1B2) and a simple website on the same topic (1B1).

• Use your prior knowledge to deliver a number of 1-minute presentations to an audience;
• Learn about open and closed questions and the ground rules of an effective group presentation;
• Learn about and use different types of language;
• Learn about how actors express emotions;
• Describing a person or a place you know well, using a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures;
• Learn about genres and identify peers’ favourite genres;
• Describe a character of a book you know well;
• Write about a memorable experience using figurative language.

English Short Course is part of the ASDAN non-GCSE option. This course is for learners who would struggle to access GCSE courses.

The speaking and listening and Reading and writing styles modules will further develop the basics of working with all the skills mentioned and will support students in giving a talk and creating pieces of writing using highly scaffolded resources.

Learners will be challenged to create and deliver a range of presentations with little preparation time (2A1). They will work with others to create the ground rules of an effective presentation (2A4) and will look at types of languages, indicating which is the appropriate one to use in different circumstances (2A7). Learners will watch an episode of a series to identify the ways actors communicate their emotions (2A9). 

In writing, learners will write about a person or a place they know well, describing it in detail (3A1), write about a memorable experience using figurative language (3A2), describe a character of a book of their choice (3A4). Lastly, learners will learn about genres (3A9).

• Learn about discussion documents and write your opinion on a controversial topic;
• Learn about online software to create an advice leaflet on anti bullying;
• Write a persuasive letter to the Headteacher;
• Learn about reviews and create one of a song/game/website.

The writing for a purpose module enables learners to familiarise themselves with diverse writing styles and purposes. 

Across the module, learners will use their analysis and critical thinking. They will be stimulated to produce pieces of writing with purpose according to their interests.

Learners will create a discussion document on a controversial topic. They will be required to think about the chosen topic and research additional ideas if needed. They will pay special attention to the way they write their notes ensuring that it is fit for purpose (5A1).

Learners will use an online platform to design an informational leaflet on bullying (5A3).

Learners will write a persuasive letter to the Headteacher to express their views on an issue of their choice (5A5).

Learners will learn about reviews and will write a review of a song/game/website of their choice (5A6).
